After a few days of some seriously beautiful and warm weather, it's safe to say the river has officially turned into a warm bath. Flows are still up, with a release of 500 CFS and a reported 622 CFS at the Pineville gauge. Temperatures this morning were a recorded 64 F, and getting up to 68 F, by mid day. We will see some thunderstorms tonight, and things cooling off a little bit with thunderstorms and rain for a greater part of the day tomorrow. Initially, the CFS at the dam was supposed to be 750, until midnight yesterday, then drop to 185 just after midnight - however, guests fishing the run reported that the flow this morning had not dropped noticeably - our periodic checks of the flow verified that the most recent flow at the dam was, in fact, 500 (as of 2 PM today and projected out until midnight tomorrow) - CFS at the Pineville gauge is currently 851 - our air temperature started at 55 degrees this morning, and rose to 77 degrees as of 4 PM - water temperature started at 60 degrees first thing this morning, and rose to 64 degrees by noon - our hazy skies cleared up to blue skies and sunshine which, with the slight breezes, made for an absolutely beautiful day to be out and fishing the run - we had a total of seven guests who joined us, arriving early and trickling in through the afternoon - one guest, who came in late and left early after just a couple of hours, was very pleased with the six Smallmouth Bass he was able to bring to hand, as well as a bonus (small) Atlantic Salmon - a guide and his companion were able to bring three bass to hand, even though they were only practicing their casting techniques (must have been effective techniques . . . ) - our other guests were also able to bring to hand a few bass as well - our overnight low will be 58 degrees - the forecast for tomorrow is "Sunshine and clouds mixed. High 83F. Winds SW at 5 to 10 mph" - tomorrow is Memorial Day - it has been often said that the cost of freedom is not "for free" . . . all too often the cost is too high . . . and that cost is paid daily by our veterans and servicemembers - please take a moment to thank veterans and servicemembers for their service and personal sacrifices, and to remember those who are no longer with us - "Thank you!".

With a bit warmer water, our pass holders noted some extra fight in them today. Both of the anglers that joined us today were able to bring at least a few to hand. With flows today at 350 CFS from the dam, it's certainly enabled some of our anglers to stretch their legs and cover some ground. Today was a toss up. Another beautiful spring day in the 70’s! Hard to believe Tug Hill received a foot of snow last week. Like yesterday, the bite was better before the sun got high on the water, strong winds also made casting difficult. Anglers continue to catch steelhead using multiple techniques. Those guests using larger flies or lures are seeing more success catching both steelhead and smallmouth bass than anglers using eggs or beads. As predicted in yesterday’s report, the water continued to warm today. Around 8am the water was 48 degrees and increased to 52 degrees by 1pm. With these types of water temperatures, steelhead tend to gravitate to faster water. With ¼” of rain forecasted for tonight, the flowcast shows the dam release will continue at 1,200 cfs through midnight tomorrow 4/26. The Pineville gauge currently reports 1,450cfs. Tomorrow’s forecast calls for cloudy skies and a chance of a shower with a high of 50 degrees, winds West at 10-15mph.

Seems like the fishing is just about as good as yesterday. A fish or two reported by most anglers. With a 750 CFS release from the dam, the Pineville gauge reading 1220 CFS for most of the day, means this run off most likely doubling the output of the dam by the time it sees us down here on the bottom end. But the good news, again, it seemed almost all of our anglers were able to get at least one fish. Regardless of the fish activity, today was quite a comfortable day. Could have even been just a bit cooler. But, you might be able to get away in a t-shirt. Reports from our anglers indicated a quieter day but nearly everyone was able to get a nice little piece of steel today. Definitely starting to see plenty of spawned out fish now, bee-lining it right for the lake. And they certainly don't waste time. Let the steelhead acrobatics commence. As if their brute power wasn't enough, now they'll really be throwing their weight around. Forecasts for the remainder of the week here leave us with some looming rain, which at this time doesn't seem like we will receive a great volume of rain. It's certainly been a roller coaster over the past week with change after change in the dam release. Today, a release of 750 CFS. With fair weather, rather mild temperatures, a little bit of overcast, you can't ask for a much better day to be on the water, let alone steelhead fishing. Reports that rolled in over the weekend, spread some optimism as we start to approach mid April now. Water temperatures were recorded at 39 F this morning, reaching 43 F mid day. From the reports we received today, it certainly wasn't lights out fishing, but most anglers were able to bring in a fish or two. One of our guides reporting some pretty energetic fish, taking him and his clients for a nice ride from Joss down to the Spring Hole before they could tame it. Good old pink worms! And, another quite an interesting note from our guide; there seem to be an abundance of walleye spawning in the lowest parts of the run here. Not uncommon to see them towards the estuary at this time of year, always a few caught unknowingly. Crossing our fingers that things will continue to warm, and we don't get too much rain. It'd be nice to see the same flow for a few days!

Blindsided by a 1900 CFS release this morning, needless to say, things were pretty quiet on the run. Most likely in anticipation of the few inches of rain we have forecasted. A couple of anglers whom had traveled a distance to get here, certainly made the best of the situation by sticking it out on the water for a majority of the day. Weather was pleasant! A bit breezy but, good overcast, and comfortable temperatures. There was no reports of any fish being brought to hand today. With higher water, things are definitely tricky. It'll drive you nuts trying to get a good drift in some of the juicy slicks and edges you, just out of reach to get it right. Presentation at these levels is definitely tough. No doubt about it. But, there definitely remains fair opportunity even with all of these limitations. With fish pushing to the edges, it's just time to look in the spots you wouldn't have looked before. I'll reference yesterdays post. Would fishing even be fun, if it weren't for all the adversity and challenges we face as anglers?

Warmer temperatures today, and finally feeling a bit more like spring here. A few more days of this, and we might just see the water temperatures creep into the 40's. This morning the recorded water temperature down here was 38 F. A few anglers reporting the water is still a bit cooler up river toward the upper fly zone. One of our guides reporting that the reservoir levels are looking surprisingly good, even after this extended high water release. Today seemed to be a tough day for our anglers, with only a few fish reported being brought to hand, and a few more lost. These blue bird skies definitely weren't in our favor. The fish most likely laying low, and tucked away, getting ready to do their thing. It's been a bit of a lull here, apparently throughout most of the river. Seems like the annual lull though, pre spawning time. I mean, would fishing even be fun, if it weren't for all of the adversity and challenges we face as anglers?

Onto the down slope now. After yesterdays 3,200 CFS release, today we saw another reduction to a 2,000 CFS release. DSR remained closed to anglers today, and will re-open when the dam release drops below 2,000 CFS. But knowing how things usually go, it'll probably be 285 CFS by Friday. If anything, while the waters raging, it certainly offers these fish a little breathing room. The water temperature here on the bottom end of the river was a recorded 34F today. Surely we'll see a nice climb in temperature as things continue to thaw. We are excited to see how the fishing is once our anglers are able to return to their normally scheduled routines down on the run.

Wish granted. Another blue bird day today. It might scare the fish a bit with no overcast, but we'll surely see the water start warming up if we can maintain this kind of weather. Warm weather means snow melt. Unaware of the snow pack situation up on the hill, I'd presume there's still quite a bit, with the dam release being increased to 1,500 CFS tonight, and scheduled to remain at 1,500 CFS tomorrow. Somethings always got to spoil the fun. Quite a few anglers on the run today, but from the reports we received indicated another grind. A bit of color to the water today, from some of the run off. As we go into the weekend, while 1,500 CFS may be not be your cup of tea, or shell-shocked by the number, it's manageable. And, no better way to master something. It's all about time spent on the water, no matter conditions, and just figuring it out!

We'll certainly take some more of this weather! A cloudy morning turned into a bluebird day, with temperatures crawling into the 50's. Lessons of the day; check the weather, don't trust the weatherman, wear layers, never overdress. Some of our anglers managed to break a sweat today. As much as we love blue skies, they can certainly be troublesome. Reports from our returning anglers today indicated a quieter day today than some of the previous outings in the week past. Had to work for them yesterday, and today as well. A few of our anglers hoofed it down to the bottom end of the run, surely taking advantage of the low pressure environment. And, I dare say it, we have exposed grass on the bank of the Meadow. Now, don't everyone run. There's still plenty of icebergs left. Results from the bottom sections of the run seemed to be less productive than the middle and upper sections today. With a 900 CFS release, for some, the river has become crossable allowing for more ground to cover, and hit some of the holes that may not have seen an angler in a while. Water temperatures this morning were recorded at 34 F at 8:00 AM. It's not much of an increase, but we're getting somewhere.

We had a steady drizzle all day but that didn't deter a handful of hearty season passholders from spending the afternoon on the run. Guests picked away with a mix of fresh and colored up steelhead, no huge numbers reported but with the drop in water flows (down to 900cfs) we expected there to be a little bit of a lull in activity. Rain will taper overnight and tomorrow will be mild and sunny.

Conditions this weekend were a bit rough. Little snow accumulation as result of Friday night's storm, with temperatures really all over the place. Reports from anglers this weekend indicated a better outing on Saturday, but overall it seemed like everyone was able to get into a fish or two, just no crazy numbers reported from the handful of guests over the weekend. Another handful of anglers joined us on the run today, again, no crazy numbers, seemed like a couple of fish for each angler with no section of the run fishing better than another. Conditions in the lower end are getting better, gradually. Pretty pleasant conditions overall today, with not much angling pressure, can't complain!

It's the calm before the storm I suppose, with temperatures climbing into the 40's today. Quite a few anglers decided to get their fishing in, while the weather was cooperative. As a result of commenting on the end of winter, we are now looking at a Winter Weather Advisory for tonight with a big question mark on just how much snow we might get. We <3 lake-effect! A majority of our anglers stuck it out for nearly the entire day. Today went one way or another it seemed. Some guests reporting multiple fish, while others reporting no fish. One pass holder took a hike today, and went 2 for 3, ALL brown trout. Our DSR guide, getting it done again today, again. We'll just say.... Good numbers. Reports from anglers indicated the water clarity has increased since the previous days. We'll see if any anglers decide to venture out this weekend. Maybe the weatherman will be wrong!

A handful of anglers joining us today, despite water flows. A majority of the anglers, pass holders (veterans of high water), including a DSR guide that drifted through the property. It’s never easy when your fighting 1,500 CFS + down on the lower river, but most of our anglers stayed on the run for nearly the entire day. Reports varied, a few left all the fish for the others, and a few got them good. With ice finally breaking up in the estuary, and allowing for exit, having a drift boat has certainly been encouraging, and a great gauge for the current quality of fishing, after what seemed like a grind the past few weeks. Consistently seeing good numbers from a veteran DSR guide and clients. They’re there!

A rather mild day today. Just over freezing with a bit of snow flurries (great overcast). But, amazingly so, a quiet day for the run. Those few that took advantage of a fair day, found a peaceful retreat down here with a considerable number of anglers upstream today. The release from the day remains 1200 CFS, and still a bit of run off, things are a bit chalky DOWN HERE. With high water it certainly makes it a bit tricky when it comes to getting a good presentation. The Pineville gauge reading 1450 CFS at the time of this report, with a recorded water temperature of 32F today. Our ten day forecasted temperatures with highs, all above freezing. We might just be over the hump here with winter. But I wouldn't hold my breath. And I know, probably shouldn't have said that. Not much snow on the ground DOWN HERE, but I'd presume there's still a fair amount of snowpack ready to feed the reservoir. Temperatures DOWN HERE and up there don't necessarily jive though. It's still an ice bath, but a few drop backs have been reported in various parts of the river, including down here over the past two weeks. Can't wait to see what April's infamous drop back season has in store for us, as the temperatures continue to warm the water up a bit.

A bit of pressure this weekend, with Saturday seeing about double the amount of anglers. Today another story. Just a few anglers joined us, one in the morning, and two guided clients in a drift boat. The two anglers wading had a tough go at things; with flows limiting accessibility. The DSR guide who floated through today, didn’t do to shabby landing fish in the double digits, all caught throughout the property. The snow showers expected today, decided to remain as rain with temperatures staying around 40F today. Trails are fairly well cleared from all the boots on the ground, but lower sections of the property still remaining tough to navigate.

Welcome to central New York! Experience all the seasons in less than just one week!! Tonight, temperatures will drop into the teens, picking up some momentum tomorrow, 60 F on Sunday, and then back to snow Monday. Who knows, maybe the salmon will start running tomorrow. Some blue in the sky today, not too cold, but the wind was another story. The handful of anglers that joined us today reiterated the wind was just a pain in the bass. But, if its not the weather, its the water. A good drift was definitely hard to come by today. Seems like all of our anglers were able to get into a fish or two, but we all know, when there's wind, there's slack. Sometimes, its just impossible to get a good hook!

A windy start to the day was definitely, and rightfully so, a deterrent for anglers. Winds continued throughout the day but dyed down just enough to make for a productive outing for the sole pass holder that joined us today, on his return from yesterday. The playground, all to himself. Envy. Taking advantage of unpressured fish, he was able to have a better day today. Which is hard to believe after the past few days reports from this angler. Persistence pays, always. Ice seems to still be proving to be quite the obstacle course when navigating down to the lower end of the property, but with the forecast in store for Sunday, might change things just a little bit. Especially if we see the flows bump back up with 60 F and rain.

Most of the anglers today, were anglers returning from yesterday, up for a little bit of redemption after an okay day. Today, we got 2 thumbs up from a few from several season pass holders. It was definitely a bit more rewarding than yesterday it seems. Not much change as far as conditions, just a bit of stabilization seemed to do the trick. Is it spring yet? Another single digit morning. But today, finally seeing a nice drop in the dam release to a fan favorite 750 CFS. Fishing this morning was bone chilling, but also a bit messy with ice and slush to start the day making its way down through the bottom end of the river. A low pressure day on the run, with a thumbs up report from one of our regular anglers. Hopefully things will start to warm up here, and we see some stabilization in the dam release. And, back to our regularly scheduled routine! A few fresh inches of snow, and temperatures staying just below 20 F most of the day, made for quite a delightful walk in the park. A few anglers joined us early this morning, one season pass holder making quick work of things, out by the early afternoon. One of our lodge guests opted to head up river after his success late yesterday down here on the run, indicating another 4 fish upriver to add to his 3 late yesterday afternoon. River conditions this morning were slushy, carrying on for most of the day today down here on the bottom end of the river. We expect a bit more of the same tomorrow. A handful of anglers came out to the run today, a few returning from that past few days. Today was better than yesterday, tougher, but better. Multiple fish brought to hand from at least one of pass holders, with a few putting one under their belt (not literally). Yesterday was the ice, today was the wind. 20 MPH is so much fun, makes for the perfect drift. We'll see what tomorrow's crew has to say. Lighter winds, and we'll trade that in for a bit of rain! A few of our anglers that have joined us over the course of the week, returned for another crack at, along with some other anglers taking advantage of the temperatures. The first angler off the water, early afternoon, indicated a solid day, going 4 for 4 with 2 of those fish being browns, on a fly rod. Expectations definitely weren't high today after the past few days, but the first report was certainly encouraging. With reports from the anglers that joined us in the past dats, its clear, today things picked up a bit. Well, Punxsutawney Phil says another 6 more weeks of winter! He might just be right looking at tomorrow's forecast. Today, was another treat, with what felt like t-shirt weather after the past few weeks. Temperatures reached the low 40's, beginning to melt some of the snow and ice that's accumulated. A whole bunch of anglers joined us, most beginning early morning. The high stick today was 3 for 5, making short work of things and headed off the run early this afternoon. But reports from there indicated things started to die down when the sun started all the melt. It's like adding a glass of ice water, to an already cold bath for the fish. A couple of anglers took my warning for granted the other day, and hoofed it all the way down to Spring Hole, to find nothing but ice! It's probably going to take a bit of water, or a lot of sun to start breaking some of that big ice down there. Temperatures will continue to drop over night tonight, with a winter storm warning in effect, rain will turn into snow early morning tomorrow. I think at some point, when you live up here, there's no reason to check the weather report, just expect snow or some crazy weather.

Things are finally starting to warm up. We aren't quite over freezing, but heat wave brought some anglers out from hibernation today. No lights out or banner days by any means, but at least they got to go fishing while we are stuck at work! Ice has continued to accumulate, with the river frozen over up until about Spring Hole. Anglers who have contacted DSR Guest Services, we haven't forgot about you, don't worry. We want to make sure we can address everyone's request and resolve things to get you planning. We woke to another morning with temperatures in the single digits which slowly rose into the mid 20's through the day. However, it still wasn't warm enough to keep the run from being unfished again. The good news is the 10 day forecast has a stretch of days at or above freezing for next week.

This weather is WILD. Temperatures hovered around 40 F today, again with little wind. With grim forecasts through the end of the month (won't get warmer than 28 F) , a handful of anglers jumped at the opportunity. Several of the anglers that joined us today indicated quite a bit of slush, and ice coming down for most of the day. This wont be the last of it either, considering that forecast that looming over us. Fishing wasn't easy today, with a lot of "One for's"today, but also a couple of "Two for's", with one brown reported today. These fish are taking complete advantage of the vail the ice shelves offer them, making for some tough drifts, and requiring calculated landing opportunities. Due to forecasted conditions, DSR will begin tomorrow with a delayed opening time of 9:00 AM. Please stay tuned for abbreviations to our schedule due to impending conditions.

With a break in the weather, today wasn't terribly cold, with minimal wind. Just a couple of anglers blazed the trails today, both having rather short outings indicating a considerable amount of slush in addition to rather unstable shelf ice. A few takes on the first few couple of casts, but today just wasn't in favor of the anglers, conditions on the river proved to be quite difficult to overcome.

Despite the dropping temperatures, conditions started out pretty good. One angler joining us right off the bat, to get his fishing in early this morning. He was to bring a beautiful colored up buck this morning. His words "They are ALL good! But some are definitely better than others”. By the end of his outing, temperatures had steadily dropped, with the wind picking up quite a bit. A few other season pass holders came in early this afternoon just at the beginning of the high winds, battling through it for a couple of hours. They were each able to hook and bring a couple of fish to hand. On their retreat back to the Welcome Center, one of the anglers wasn’t ready to call it a day, hitting another fish on his way back and continued to stick it out for quite a while. With temperatures continuing to drop, and anticipated to plummet below zero, DSR will be open for abbreviated hours on Saturday 1/15/22 and Sunday 1/16/22; Opening at 9:00 AM / Closing at 3:00 PM.

Today was a bit of a luxury, with temperatures finally breaking freezing reaching a high of about 36F. Another treat, the dam was dropped to 350 CFS at 7:00 AM this morning, making for quite an interesting day. Typically never favorable for anglers when we have a drop during the day. Between snow melt, and shelf ice beginning to give way with no support from the higher water, things were definitely a bit of a mess in some areas of the run. Most of our anglers seemed to have a tough go at it today, most with success coming early this morning, before we saw the affects of the water drop. Some of our veteran pass holders, took advantage of the break in the weather and ventured a bit farther today and were rewarded handsomely. The high stick of the day today went 7 for 9 (covering a lot of ground), bottom bouncing egg sacs. His theory, it was all luck, with lightly pressured water this past week. Temperatures will begin to drop back down tonight, with a forecasted 23 F at our opening time tomorrow. And, it's only expected to get colder as the day goes on, projected to drop down to 9 F by closing tomorrow. Saturday, is even COLDER. Please stay tuned for announcements surrounding abbreviated hours this weekend in the event of the zub zero temperatures.

Not quite as cold as yesterday, but the wind sure made it feel worse. Surprisingly, despite this little break in temperatures, we didn't see much angling pressure today. Two anglers ventured onto the run this afternoon, one first-timer and one veteran pass holder, both float fishing. They both expressed ice shelfs which were quite difficult to negotiate while fishing in the middle section. But, our pass holder indicated compared to a few days prior, and a slight drop in the water, the ice shelves have started to clear way a bit. Good news for the middle section, sounds like bad news for the lower end of the run, I can only imagine the piles of ice beginning to claim the banks and runs. Despite the ice shelfs, our pass holder was able to get plenty of good drifts in, and landed a few fish. Expectations were set a bit higher for today, but they just weren't having it today. Temperatures are forecasted to creep past freezing tomorrow, but with snow flurries in the mix.

Well, we got exactly what was forecasted for this one. Temperatures dropped dramatically last night, with temperatures around -7 F when we arrived at the office today. Needless to say, although the run would have felt like a warm bath on a day like today, slush and ice shut things down today for anglers on the river. With about a foot or so of snowfall here, and untouched water for a couple of days now. Smells fishy to me. DSR will resume normal hours of operation tomorrow (6:45AM - 5:45PM), with a fair forecast of about 28 F around our opening time. Just be ready to chip some ice, and blaze some trails! Winds tomorrow look to be the only trouble in store, until we approach the weekend with some more intensely cold weather.
