January 31, 2024

CFS at the dam remains at 1500 (at least until midnight tonight), CFS at the Pineville gauge started at 1850 and only dropped to 1830 by the end of the day - water temperature was 34 degrees - an overcast day, with little to no wind, no precipitation - a few guests tried the run this morning, all without success - a solitary angler arrived very late in the afternoon, fished at most a couple of hours, and "had a good day". tonight's forecast is: "Cloudy. Flurries or snow showers possible late. Low 33F. Winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph." Tomorrow's forecast is: "Cloudy early with showers for the afternoon hours. A few flurries or snow showers possible. Temps nearly steady in the mid 30s. Winds SW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of rain 40%." Please be sure to monitor scheduled flows via safewaters.com/facility/lighthouse-hill ahead of any upcoming trips.

Reasonable temperatures with light winds made for decent fishing conditions, but for some reason anglers stayed away today. One angler fished for a few hours this afternoon without success before calling it a day. Water flow from the dam remains at 1500cfs and the flow at Pineville is holding steady at 1880cfs. Improving weather conditions are forecast for tomorrow with some sunshine predicted (if you can believe that) and temperatures in the low 40's. Sounds like a good day to hit the river.

The dam release increased to 1500 CFS last night, where it remained today, and is currently scheduled to remain until 11:59 PM tomorrow (1/29).  Rain and higher water kept things fairly quiet on the run, with a few anglers making their way onto the run beginning first thing this morning.  Based on the Pineville gauge, we've continued to see runoff slowly taper off.  From reports we received from anglers today, it seems things fished similar to that of yesterday in the 1200 release with just a few fish hooked and landed, most of which were fresh steelhead with 1 brown trout reported in the mix.  Currently, the dam release is scheduled to remain at 1500 CFS until 11:59 PM tomorrow 1/29. Please be sure to monitor scheduled flows via safewaters.com/facility/lighthouse-hill ahead of any upcoming trips.

Despite the higher water a number of anglers joined us, with most getting an early start this morning.  Runoff began tapering off a bit today, but still a significant amount of it, based on the Pineville gauge still running about 600 CFS higher than the dam release.  From the reports we received from our anglers today, water clarity didn't seem to be too much of an issue.  Given the high flows restricting the accessibility, a majority of angling efforts remained focused on the north side, and particularly the middle sections of the property.  A few anglers made their way to the lower most sections of the property, happily reporting that things are no longer 'locked up' with ice. Overall, it seems the fishing was 'okay' today, most just had a hard time keeping them on the hook.  With another day of rain ahead of us, the dam release is currently scheduled to be increased from the current 1200 CFS to 1500 CFS at 6:00 PM tonight (1/27).  Given the variability and frequent adjustment to the dam release scheduling, please monitor flows via safewaters.com/facility/lighthouse-hill ahead of any upcoming trips.

The temperatures were moderate again today and the sun tried to come out (we saw a few patches of blue) but it never made it and then the temperatures started to drop. While we didn't have much rain today, there was considerable snow melt which put colder water into the system and caused the level to rise throughout the day. The few anglers that I spoke with had a couple of fish on, but were not successful bring one to hand The water from the dam will remain at 1200 cfs and the water at Pineville is 1880 cfs

It's certainly hard to ask for more comfortable winter conditions.  Temperatures remained in the low 40's today, with plenty of overcast and very little wind.  With another day of warmer temperatures we have continued to see a significant amount of snow melt sending ice cold run-off into the river.  Based on the reports we received from anglers today, things remained pretty consistent throughout the day.  Most anglers fortunate enough to find a couple of fish, but they seemed few and far between today with the continued surge of cold snow melt.  At this time the dam release is currently scheduled to remain at 500 CFS until 11:59 PM tonight (1/25).  Please be sure to monitor the scheduled dam release via safewaters.com/facility/lighthouse-hill.

It's nice to see a glimpse of some blue skies after all that snow! While temperatures are still below freezing, we made it out of the teens today for the first time in a few days now. Just a few anglers eagerly took to the run today, but contended with significant slush this morning until things crawled out of the teens with a little encouragement from the sun.   With the combination of low temperatures, snow, and lack of activity, we've started to develop our first substantial shelf ice of the season down on the run.  It also appears that the estuary has frozen over, over the past week, and has likely begun to freeze over some of the lower most sections of the property.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT Due to the forecast of a winter storm, the DSR will have a delayed opening tomorrow. At this point we plan to open at 9:00AM. However, with the possibility of more extreme conditions, check back for any updates; which would be posted before 9:00AM Despite the threat of the inclement weather, a good number of anglers made their way to the run today. This morning, after a few gusts of wind, things settled down and conditions were actually pretty good for most of the morning. Shortly after noon another front came through, brought some rain, and the wind shifted. Currently (3:30PM) the wind is pretty strong and all the anglers that were leaving the run commented on the difficulty of the conditions this afternoon. Although the conditions were challenging, most anglers were able to have some limited success. Not big numbers by any stretch of the imagination, but enough to have made their outing worthwhile. Because of the warmer temperatures, we did experience considerable runoff and this morning, in particular, the water got considerably murky. The flow from the dam is 300 cfs and the current flow at Pineville is 590 cfs (ticking upwards due to the rain and runoff).

It seemed like we were going to get a bit of a reprieve from the onslaught of high winds, but winds began to pick bag up gradually as the morning progressed.  By this afternoon we began to experience similar wind conditions to that of yesterday, minus the abundance of freezing rain and snow.  With a bit of warmer temperatures last night into this morning, most of the lingering snow quickly vanished.  Despite the conditions, a number of anglers joined us for the morning, with a few anglers sticking it out for the majority of the day.  Based on the reports we received from our anglers today, while still challenging, the fish seemed to be a tad bit more cooperative with nearly all anglers indicating that they hooked into multiple fish.  Landing them, was a different story in this wind.   The dam release remained at 285 CFS for the day, where it is currently scheduled to remain until 11:59 PM tonight (1/10).  Please check safewaters.com/facility/lighthouse-hill for updated dam release scheduling ahead of any planned trips.

Snow showers for the better part of the day that relented in mid-afternoon. It must have been the threat of more serious weather that kept the anglers at home today. Only about dozen anglers joined us today and experienced excellent fishing conditions. A bit of snow; maybe 6 inches on the ground (but Hey! this is Steelhead season), no wind, reasonable water level, and manageable temperatures. The consensus was that fishing was a bit more difficult that it was yesterday. Most were able to connect, some didn't, but those that did had to work for them today. An angler that fished just this afternoon was able to bring two fish to hand. Another that fished the better part of the day did better than that and a couple float fishermen that usually do very well, went fishless. While a limited sample size, the lower section was the better section with the upper section being more challenging. Tomorrow's weather looks to be more promising with temperatures above freezing, little wind and some periods of sunshine. The flow from the dam remains t 500 cfs and the current flow at Pineville is 717 cfs
