185 CFS Dam Release

Since last Monday, our CFS at the dam was 285 to start on Tuesday, then dropped to 185, where it has remained for the last several days. The CFS at the Pineville gauge, from an initial high of 366, has since dropped to the mid 200s over the same period of days. Our weather conditions have been relatively stable, with temperatures generally in the mid 70s to mid 80s, with one day at 90 degrees, light winds, mixed overcast, humid. A few guests ventured out onto the run (except for today - we had no guests), primarily targeting either Smallmouth Bass or Fallfish, with isolated guests each day enjoying relative success, generally in the 12" to 14" range for the bass. The general comment was that these guests had to work the run top to bottom to find any fish. Anglers are having success on salmon just offshore; there is little doubt that some salmon are already nosing into the area of the estuary section of the river.

There was only one angler on the run on Saturday and no one on Sunday, a contributing factor to the low numbers may have been the rise in the flow from 185CFS on Thursday night to 750CFS on Sat. and Sun., the water clarity was noted by the one angler on Sat. as being stained. There were 4 anglers on the run today. The anglers has some success today with a Smallmouth landed. At 10pm this evening the flow will be 750CFS. There were a few water temperatures noted ranging from 72F on Wed. to a high of 78F on Thursday. The weather for the weekend looks to be a bit of a mixed bag with Saturday's high of 83F and a low of 68F, partly cloudy and the winds SSW at 7mph. On Sunday to temperatures drop to a high of 75F and a low of 59F with AM T-Storms, the winds will be WNW at 11mph. ***The DSR will be close tomorrow, Friday, July 4th for our Nation’s Birthday and will re-open Saturday, July 5th from 6:00am – 1:00pm.*** We’ve had water flows from 250 cfs through 350 cfs this week, water temperatures in the high 60s to low 70s, with plenty of sun mixed in with cloud cover for those guests who fished with us. Although Smallmouth fishing does seem to be down from historical averages here on the DSR all of our anglers that targeted them hooked and landed at least (1) and some days several more. The other species that has had some followers is Fall Fish with several anglers specifically pursuing them this week, with catches normally in the single digits. We are about 45 days away from the 1st Salmon making it’s way into the river and the excitement is building with each passing day!
