August 31, 2025

5pm River Patrol fishing report follows: Similar to yesterday’s afternoon report, the fishing from the lowest section of the run to the top experienced slow results, and low angler volume today.  With the sun shining down brightly and the flow at 185 cfs from the dam, the fish were mostly holding in the deeper sections.  The fish that were caught were predominantly Kings. Tomorrow’s weather is scheduled to start off mostly sunny, with temperatures in the low 50s rising to the mid-70s by mid-afternoon, when mostly cloudy skies will move in.  Winds will be from the N / WNW 2-8 mph.  There is little chance of any precipitation. The flow from the dam is scheduled to remain at 185 cfs through at least midnight tomorrow. As mentioned previously, the river restoration project is on hold through tomorrow and will re-commence Tuesday, September 2nd with the completion now scheduled for NLT September 5th.

With our River Patrol members now patrolling the entire DSR portion of the river, we will be receiving daily fishing reports (usually mid-morning and early evening) from the River Patrol, in a standardized format. Here is a breakdown of terms we will be using, to allow you to interpret the fishing reports for your own use: Estuary section: lowest part of the DSR property, essentially from the lower property line upriver to # 28 (Bobber Hole) on the DSR river map Lower Section: the area of the river from # 28 (Bobber Hole) upriver to #20 (Spring Hole) Middle Section: the area of the river from #20 (Spring Hole) upriver to # 9 (Glide) Upper Section: the area of the river from # 9 (Glide) to # 3 (Black Hole) Top Section: the area of the river from # 3 (Black Hole) to # 1 (Employee Hole) and the upper property line Volume of Anglers High - Moderate - Low - None - Angling Success (this is a subjective averaging, of the overall angler success within large subsections of the river, a "snapshot", and may differ from your own subjective experience within another, more specific, section of the river, perhaps at other timeframes) Quiet - Slow - Moderate - Good - Excellent -

August 28, 2025

CFS at the dam will remain at 185 until further notice, due to drought conditions. CFS at the Pineville gauge is 216. Today the air temperature started in the high 50s and peaked at 74 degrees, with cloudy to partly cloudy skies, and light winds. The water temperature ranged from 64 to 67 degrees. What a difference one day makes. Our guests started reporting sighting salmon soon after getting on the run, with one guest specifically stating that he saw approximately 30 pass through while he was angling in a spot. So far, with the majority of guests still on the run, we have had a total of six Chinook (King) Salmon brought up to the Welcome Center, about the 12 to 15 pound range. Credits for the photographs, as well as congratulations, to Billy (not shown in photograph), Clayton (sleeveless), and Niko (black shirt) for these beautiful Chinook (King) Salmon they brought to hand. I will update this post if there are significant developments later: late this afternoon our Manager sighted a dozen fish passing one spot within 15 minutes, other guests coming back off the run continue to report seeing significant numbers of salmon continuing to push upriver (not stopping). We have been experiencing a soaking rain since before dusk; we are supposed get an half-inch total overnight.  Note: our opening time changes to 5:45 AM tomorrow morning; as soon as you check-in, you are released to the river.  The forecast for tomorrow is: "Becoming partly cloudy after some morning rain. High 63F. Winds NW at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 60%." Note: fishing below "No Name" (number 19 on the DSR map of the run) is prohibited due to ongoing construction.

8/25/2025-A partly cloudy day with temperatures making it to the low 70s with light W / SW winds was the weather pattern today here on the run. Our guests started showing up at first light and a few still remain as this report is being written.  A couple of Smallmouth were caught, but no other species were brought to hand or sighted. Tomorrow, temperatures will range from the high 50s climbing to the upper 60s by late afternoon with winds out of the West 6-13 mph.  A few light showers possible in the morning, but not much in the way of accumulation predicted. The flow from the dam was 185 cfs today and scheduled to remain at that level through midnight tomorrow evening; the Pineville gauge is currently reading 216 cfs. As noted in several of our previous reports, the river restoration is underway in the lower portions of the river, (‘No Name Hole / #19 on our map), and fishing / walking is closed from that area downstream.  The completion date remains NLT 1 Sep. ’25.

8/24/2025-The rain that we had hoped to get didn’t materialize, at least up to the time of this report.  Cloudy skies with temperatures in the upper 70s, along with high humidity and southerly winds was the weather pattern for us today. Our guests, (some are still on the river at this time), caught some Smallmouth and Fall fish, but didn’t raise or see any Salmon throughout the day. The water flow remained at 185 cfs from the dam and 216 cfs at Pineville. Tomorrow’s forecast calls for temperatures starting out around 60 degrees F barely reaching 70 degrees F by days end, coupled with winds from the W /  SW at 5-7 mph, picking up after midday and be coming Westerly at 10-15 mph.  There is some light precipitation listed for the morning hours but becoming mostly sunny in the afternoon. As we are approaching the start of the salmon season, our guests are reviewing, and adjusting, their fishing plans. If our guests have not already purchased their Daily Access Fishing Passes (DAPs) online, and in advance, for the peak season, or may be attempting to change their fishing dates to an higher-demand period, many are experiencing an inability to obtain any, or all desired, DAPs for their trip. There are a few options which may assist you in obtaining passes for your trip, now as well as in the future:
NOTE: our DAPs, for the coming seasons, are usually released for online sales during mid-January; there have been a few guests who were not aware of this action on the part of the DSR. Please pre-mark your 2026 calendar for the Fall 2026 season.
• Consider Alternate Date(s). If your schedule is relatively flexible, consider either earlier or later date(s) during the peak season, as the last week of September and the first week of October are the highest demand weeks and typically sell-out rapidly. Salmon, Steelhead, and Brown Trout are plentiful in our river system from mid-September through mid-November;
• Monitor the Website. At this time passes may not be available online, but commonly we will have cancellations or pass date changes for various reasons. Cancellations are automatically placed back into our inventory on our website, and changes of pass dates also have the same effect of "freeing" up passes on a particular date. We encourage guests seeking passes, for currently sold-out dates, to monitor the pass availability as much as possible in the interim period. DSR does not maintain any waiting lists for daily passes;
• Hire a DSR Approved Guide. – DSR approved guides are guaranteed access for each of their clients only for the day(s) and times they are actively guiding the clients. Be aware that if you have a "morning-only" guided trip, and did not make prior arrangements for the afternoon, if we have reached our angler limit then you may not be able to continue fishing the run; a simple solution is to pre-purchase full-day daily fishing access passes, while they are available online, even though you may only be guided during the morning. DSR’s guides are independent contractors and require guests to initiate inquiries about their services and availability on their own. A list of approved DSR Guides may be found by visiting our website; on the home page, at the upper left-hand corner select "Menu", then "Fishing", then "DSR Guides";
• Consider Renting a Lodge. If available, our rates are very competitive with those in the local area. As lodge guests you are guaranteed to be able to purchase daily access fishing passes, from your date of check-in through your date of check-out, up to the total number of guests in the lodge. You may also access the water earlier than most other categories of fishing access passes and the general public;
• Purchase a Walk-up Pass. – DSR has collected data over the years past, which allows us to calculate averages and estimate guest attendance on any day. Should those estimates be off, and space is available, DSR will release remaining passes for sale via the procedures published at www.douglastonsalmonrun.com/walkup beginning at 7:00 AM. Please note that pass availability varies for any given day and is not guaranteed.
• Purchase an Afternoon Pass. – As anglers come off the water for the day, we check-out each angler. This in turn creates openings for additional guests to get on the water. It is highly critical that each guest try to inform us that they are coming off the water for the day, so that we may allow another guest the opportunity to fish; "pay it forward" so that, in the future, it may be you who benefits. At 12:45 PM each day, available Afternoon Passes will be published for sale. Guests who have purchased afternoon passes may redeem them at our Welcome Center, beginning at 1:00 PM.
You may also wish to consider the purchase of a season pass, which will guarantee you unlimited daily fishing access during the period this pass is in effect, as well as other benefits such as earlier access and coupons for your own guests to fish. In order to be eligible for an invitation to purchase a season pass, it is necessary to first place a $100 deposit for our season pass waitlist. The $100 deposit may subsequently be used to defray the cost of the season pass; be applied to the costs of DAPs, lodging, services; or refunded or credited should you no longer desire to pursue a season pass. Please visit our website and at the upper left-hand corner select "Menu", "Fishing" from the drop-down menu, then "Season Passes" within the selection offered.
I hope the information above assists you. It’s certainly difficult to defer guests to these alternative methods of obtaining access, but DSR must stay true to its angler limit promise.
We appreciate your understanding and look forward to you joining us on the water soon.

NOTICE: effective tomorrow, 8 August, we will transition from Summer to Fall hours of operation: specifically, from 8 through 14 August we will be open 5:15 AM until 5 PM daily. Subsequent hours of operation may be found on our website: in the upper left hand corner of the home page, select "Menu", from the drop-down menus then select "About", then "Release Schedule", and then click on the timeframe of dates you desire to review. Also, on 8 August our nine month season passes will be effective. We have published almost all of them (excepting those missing uploaded pictures in their accounts), so they may be issued upon your first visit to the DSR. Please ensure that you are in possession of a valid New York State fishing license at the time you request your season pass to be issued. On Tuesday at 7 AM the CFS at the dam dropped to 185, where it remained until 9 PM Wednesday when it increased to 400, however at 6 AM today it dropped back to 185, where it remains. There were correlating fluctuations in the CFS at the Pineville gauge. Air temperatures were in the mid 80s during this period, with light winds, and partly cloudy to clear skies. We had two guests each day Tuesday and Wednesday, one targeting Fallfish those days. The other angler each day caught a Bluegill, and a small Rainbow Trout. One angler specifically ventured out yesterday in an attempt to be the first this season to bring a salmon to hand at the DSR (he was unsuccessful). Today we have two guests on the run; we will update this post should they encounter any salmon.
